Trip Overview

This 15-day tour of Vietnam immerses you in a cultural adventure that you’ll be talking about for many years to come. In it, you visit the homes of Hmong hill tribes where they teach you how to batik your own textiles; you ride a water buffalo and get hands-on planting rice in Hoi An; you row basket boats with local fisherman at our “secret beach” that’s not yet mentioned in any guidebooks (there, you can also collect some of the most beautiful shells we’ve ever seen!); you can eat Tiger Lobster - the most sought-after and expensive fish in Southeast Asia - that is so fresh, my friend Muoi literally dives into the ocean to catch it for you; take a leisurely bike ride through charming villages untouched by tourism; marvel at beautiful silk lanterns in Hoi An (the whole town is one giant photo opp!) and watch silk worms at work; photograph the luscious green and gold rice fields and terraces at harvest time in the mountain-surrounded valley of Mai Chau; “wow!” at the views as we drive along the stunning Hai Van Pass overlooking the South China Sea; visit the UNESCO World Heritage Cham ruins of My Son; learn the symbolism for dragons, phoenix, unicorns, turtles and bats and how they are used to tell stories in temples and pagodas. These are just a few of the magical activities we have in store for you.
The Magical Vietnam Tour is a more budget-friendly version of the Luxurious Vietnam Tour. You still enjoy almost all of the same amazing adventures (see the slideshow on that page for additional photos of what you can expect) but you save money by staying in boutique hand-selected 3 star accommodation (versus the 4 and 5 star digs on the Luxury Tour), skipping the seaplane tour of Ha Long Bay, the Golden "2 Hands" Bridge, and having your tour max out at 10 guests instead of 8. Your accommodations will still be selectively chosen, clean, modern and well-located.
How about it? Are you ready the trip of a lifetime?

This is your home for 2 days on one of our “secret beaches.” Relax, drink fresh coconut juice right from the coconut. In the afternoon, we’ll paddle basket boats to the island off in the distance to collect the most beautiful shells you’ve ever seen.

Taste the salt on your lips as the spray from the South China Sea mists your face. Round basket boats like these are used by local fisherman to ferry fish back to their larger boats. Just like these prior tour guests, you’ll get to try your hand at rowing them.

You'll have a chance not only to ride one of these water buffalo (the humorous Vietnamese call them BMW's ... Buffalo Made Way) but you can also try your hand plowing with one.

Banana flower salad is a light, bright citrusy treat that will delight your taste buds ... and your camera lens! If you’d like to take a cooking class during your free time and learn how to make it, I know just the place.

City of Ghosts is a fascinating place that is way off the beaten tourist path. It's not only cool to look at, you’ll learn the intriguing story of how it came to exist. While here, you’ll learn the symbolism for dragons, phoenix, unicorns, turtles and bats and how they are used to tell stories in temples and pagodas.

A "Chinese junk boat" sailing through stunning Ha Long Bay. If you join the optional extension, you’ll be sailing through scenes just like this one!

The Imperial Citadel’s East Gate in Hue, the first outer entrance to the Forbidden Purple City at the center. During feudal times when the Citadel was still a bustling palace, only men were allowed to use this gate. Women had to use the West Gate on the opposite side of the city.

The charm and beauty of silk lanterns in Hoi An. When you see how beautiful this typical shot from the night market is, imagine how lovely it will be when your group floats candles down the river in front of shops like these. And oh yes ... you get to make a wish along with your candle!

This “secret beach” is great because there are tons of craggy rock outcroppings everywhere. It not only makes for cool photos but creates some spaces like private little rooms. And that makes it a great place to do yoga if you choose.

This is my good friend Muoi holding a tiger lobster - Southeast Asia’s most expensive and sought after fish. On your tour, we’ll visit his fish farm in the South China Sea and he’ll dive for these very same lobsters for your lunch!

I photographed these gorgeous rice terraces in Mai Chau in April. By the time we visit in May, the rice will be thick and tall and will make for gorgeous photos.

The Quintessence of Tonkin, a spectacular new must-see show in Hanoi, takes place right on a real lake with stages that raise and lower so the performers seem to glide on water. Part light show, part ballet, part spectacle, this musical amazement celebrates the ancient culture of North Vietnam … and I have a ticket with your name on it.

Meet my Black Hmong friends. When I visited, they surprised me on my final night with a performance of traditional dances from their culture. They donned their ethnic clothing and even laid out a set for me to wear! We have a full day of activities in store for you based on the coolest things we did together over my 4 day visit.

An endless source of both amusement and amazement to me was not only the kind of things but the QUANTITY of things that the Vietnamese loaded onto their motorbikes! After your first 30 minutes there, you will be yawning at seeing 3-4 grown adults riding a motorbike. 5 gets more interesting but this was my penultimate capture ... 6 people on a single bike!

Bahn xeo - slated for one of our meals - is named for the sizzle the batter makes when cooking in the pan. When cut into pieces and rolled with herbs in rice paper, it’s hard to say what’s more enjoyable about eating it … the crunchy texture or the delicious taste.

These Cham ruins were buried in the jungle for hundreds of years before being rediscovered by some French hunters about 100 years ago. Now it's a UNESCO world heritage site. We’ll visit them at sunrise before any other tourists arrive so you can experience the sacred energy that drew the Cham people to build their temples here.

In the mountain village of Pa Co, some of the H'mong people still wear their traditional clothing on a daily basis and not just for special occasions.

My dear friend Pao will play the kehn for you, a traditional pan pipe musical instrument popular in the H'mong ethnic groups. Not so long ago, men would play these to woo women to become their wives so skillfulness at this instrument cannot be underestimated!

When this is the last sight you see before turning left into your 4 room boutique hotel, you know you’ve found a special secret hideaway. Follow me as I lead you through the narrow alley-like streets of the fishing village to get here. Then just kick back and enjoy your vacation!

Markets like this one are prevalent throughout Vietnam. And you'll get to try all kinds of fruits and vegetables that you never knew existed until you came here!

Vietnam’s own version of the Chinese terra cotta army guards this opulent tomb of the last Vietnamese emperor to be buried in Vietnam.

Cha ca is a dish famous in Hanoi that we’ll share during our first group meal. The fish is marinated in a turmeric mixture and grilled. Then it sizzles in a pan at your table while it's cooked a second time with fresh dill and onions to give it a crispy crunch.

You’ll have 3 days to soak up scenes like this which abound in the peaceful Mai Chau Valley.

On a tiny island just a short ride in a basket boat from our “secret beach” I found ALL of these shells in only about 20 minutes. Are you a shell collector? Then I've found your spot!
